About Rambo- Senior needs a home to live out his days

  • Status: Adopted!
  • Species: Dog

2/20/16 Rambo has been in our rescue for more than a year. When he came to us, he had been starved and severely neglected. He had a callous all the way around his neck where he had apparently been chained for probably his whole life. That has finally filled in with hair and is barley visible now. But the callouses on all of his pressure points are still present and will probably never go away. This is a testament to the life he led. Im sure he was never offered anything soft to lie on - he probably lived on a concrete slab or bare ground. On top of the callouses and many wounds he had, he also came to us with a horrible case of pneumonia and arthritis. When I first looked at him I didn't think he would live a week. He couldn't walk. He was beat down and had given up. But with some TLC, anti-inflammatories, and antibiotics, he started to come around. Now, more than a year later, he is doing so much better! He is an old man. Probably about 10 years but seems much older due to the hard life he had.  Rambo is not neutered and is not a candidate for surgery so he will only go to a home that is 100% sure they can keep him away from any unspayed females. I have wrestled with the idea of letting him leave the rescue since he is not neutered because normally I would never even consider it. But Rambo shouldn't have to live out the rest of his life in the shelter here if there is a good home out there somewhere for him. I took him in with the hope of giving him a good quality of life for however much time he had left but did not realize that I would not be able to get him neutered. Rambo is not overly affectionate with people but does enjoy having his ears scratched and enjoys getting pets. He will even come up to me and "ask" for attention now. He's just never had that before and isn't sure what to make of it,, but he knows he likes it. He does not care for being hugged - I think it scares him. So he probably should not go to a home with young children who think they can hug him or lie on him or otherwise get in his personal space when he's not ready for it. He gets along good with all of the other dogs here, he just ignores them and doesn't want them to bother him. He's kind of a grumpy old man. My hope is that I can find a home for him where he can have a soft bed and not have to be confined all the time like he is here at the shelter, although he doesn't seem to mind the confinement. He is in his crate most of the time and when I try to give him extra time outside, he just wants to go back in to his crate. I know in my heart that it's not really because he is happy in the crate, it is simply the best thing he's ever known and he has no idea that things can be better than that. I want him to know the best that life has to offer before he leaves this world. I want him to know that he is loved and is part of a family in whatever way he can offer. He has been failed by people all his life. I want to show him that not everyone will fail him. It makes my heart so happy to see him "running" in the yard on a warm day. He loves the sunshine and he actually feels pretty good these days. He may only have a short time left. Can anyone help me show him a better life than he has known? Rambo is located in Arkansas but out of state transport is available. For more info, email kelley.aasr@gmail.com
