Dogue de Bordeaux / Mixed : : Female : : Young : : Large
PLEASE NOTE! Unless stated otherwise, our dogs and puppies are located in Arkansas, and transported to the north/northeast once adopted. We do occasionally have dogs/puppies placed in foster homes in the north/northeast. In the cases where the pet is somewhere other than Arkansas, it will be noted beside the name of the pet.
And here we have Heidi! She is one of our pups currently at the Paws In Prison Program. If you aren’t familiar with the program, it is a training program that was started in AR about 15 years ago. It is where you enroll a dog and they are paired with 2 inmates. These inmates have gone through training themselves, to learn how to properly train the dogs. Once enrolled, the dog lives at the prison with the inmates for 8 weeks. During that time, they are trained in basic obedience. They learn skills like house training, basic commands, leash walking, manners, etc. The inmates and the dogs all meet with the trainer once a week in a common area, where all the dogs are together, and each week they show the trainer what they have learned, and get assigned new tasks for the following week. Each inmate keeps a journal on their dog. The journal is passed along to the adopter once the dog is adopted. The journal tells all about the dog, what they have learned, what they still need to work on, likes/dislikes, etc. At the end of the 8 weeks, the dog goes through the Canine Good Citizen test. If they pass, they graduate. If not, they stay a little longer and continue learning, until they pass! It is an absolutely amazing program and is so beneficial for the dogs and the inmates!
Here’s what they have to say about Heidi-
“Little reddish brown nugget of love and puppyness. With some lighter stripes thrown in for dramatic flair. Her name is Heidi, and she’s not from the hills. Heidi comes from the flatlands of Jefferson County. She has a very gentle, sweet personality. Heidi is a puppy and she milks it for everything she can get out of it. We believe she’s about 6-months-old and weighs about 50 pounds. Heidi’s sister is with us, too. We’ll post her later! She’s every bit as sweet as Heidi, but as much as Heidi is a still a baby, her sister is an old soul. Just wait…you’ll see. Both sisters are fine young ladies and need homes!!!”
We believe Heidi is a Dogue de Bordeaux mix!She and her 3 sisters were dumped in the extreme Arkansas summer heat, on a paved road with no shelter, food, or water. When our volunteer came upon them, they were all heat exhausted and dehydrated but they were trying their best to survive. They were thrilled that someone stopped to help them and they happily hopped in he car to be rescued. some dogs just know they need help. All 4 of them had cherry eyes, which we have had surgically corrected. Cherry eyes is a prolapse of the nictitating membrane, or 3rd eyelid, and requires surgical intervention.
We believe she is a French mastiff (Dogue de Bordeaux) mix - think Turner and Hooch. She is not a giant size, but if our age and breed guesses are correct, she still has some growing to do. Mastiff breeds will often continue growing and filling out until they are at least 2 years old. She will probably never be a giant size but will likely be a large dog.
Heidi is spayed, UTD on vaccines, and microchipped!
