About Mia

  • Status: Adopted!
  • Species: Dog

Mia came into our rescue 8 years ago, very pregnant when we got her from an abusive owner. My mom took her in and fostered her and all 7 puppies when they were born. The puppies all got great homes but my sweet Mama kept Mia and has loved and adored her. Sadly, my mama has dementia now and it has progressed very rapidly. She has reached the point where she can no longer take care or herself or her pets. I have brought Mia to my house and she's ok as long as I'm sitting and holding her. But otherwise she is pretty scared of all of my large dogs and just isn't in the ideal situation here. Mia has been coddled for the last 8 years. She has always lived with other dogs - 2 other small dogs and 1 large breed who passed away 2-3 years ago. She was never nervous around them or scared, but at my house it's pretty overwhelming and my dogs are not welcoming to newcomers. I think she senses that they don't want her here and it's making her nervous. Her little heart is just broken being taken from my mom and the only good home she ever knew. She needs a quiet home to live out her life and learn to love another family. She is very capable of opening her heart again, it will just take a little time for her to adjust. This has been very hard on her. As you can see in her photos, Mia is overweight. This is mostly due to my Mom's declining mental health - not feeding the right foods or the right portion sizes, and not giving her the exercise she needs. I am hoping we can get her down to a more healthy size. Mia was perfectly housetrained for many years but again, due to my mom's illness, she has begun having accidents because she wasn't being let outside enough. Here at my house she is scared to go outside because of the other dogs so she has had accidents but I believe in a different setting she could easily learn house training again. I am looking for a kind, patient family for Mia. She does like kids and is not aggressive to anyone. She is good with cats. She just needs a place that is less intimidating than I can provide. Mia is about 10 years young. She is very cuddly and loving. She loves to sleep next to me in my bed and sit with me any time I'm still long enough. She should have a lot of good years left. She is in good health other than being over weight. It breaks my heart to not be able to keep her in our family but her safety and happiness is more important and I know my mom would agree. Mia is a rat terrier mix. She is spayed, utd, and heartworm negative.
In New England.
