About Charlie

  • Status: Adopted!
  • Species: Dog
  • Housetrained: Yes

9/4/17 Charlie was rescued from a kill shelter in Arkansas. He is a wonderful little guy, who is estimated to be about 2 years old and weighs 22lbs. Charlie is located in a foster home in Arkansas and is doing very well there with the other dog in the home. His foster mom has been very patient with him while he learned some basic manners, which Charlie has picked up quickly. Charlie gets along great with the other Dachshund in the home, with the exception of not wanting to share his food. This is an easy fix - he is fed in his crate and foster mom makes sure no food is ever accessible for the 2 of them to fight over. This is what his foster mom had to say about him, after having him for a week.

Things I have learned about Charlie this week.
1. He is food aggressive, they had milk bones and he bit Tucker on the snout over it. Tucker has a scratch & a bit of swelling but is fine I think. I feed them at the same time ( 2separate dishes ) and just makes sure he knows no. He did leap into the air and come down beside Tucker and bark one day, apparently he wanted him to share. Funniest thing I ever saw. He also has a huge appetite. I feed him a cup of dry food mixed with a bit of wet and he eats in about 5 secs.
2. He can climb a pool ladder, as I noticed him poking his head under the top of it while swimming one day. He doesn't do it if we are not in it but likes to sit on the top if we swim, color me surprised ha!
3. He can get on the counter tops for sampling of delicious items ha! I moved a container I think he is using but he is very agile so he might just leap up there. He also can get up on the shelf I have out side for hanging out laundry and likes to stroll on the deck railing !!!
3. He is VERY agile. I think he could jump our fence if he knew it but I am not going to tell him.
4. He is great with kids. He will nip their fingers if they get excited with him as any puppy will do, he will out grow this I would think as he gets older. He sleeps on my 6 year old grand daughters bed at night when she is here and she really loves him.
5. He is mostly potty trained. He has had a couple of accidents in the house but I may not have noticed he needed out too. I have tile & wood so I don't worry about it too much. He had some loose stool and probably couldn't help it. He does tap on the door twice to go out which makes me think he must of had a home one time.
6. He loves to sleep with us, not sure how you do it at your house. That's the first thing he did the second night was get on the bed to sleep. Tucker's up there and when my daughters doxie was alive and visited he always slept with us. Charlie very much acts like her black & tan.
7. He has to be crated or put in the back yard or the deck with water when we go out in the day. He basically dismantles the house if you don't. Ask me how I know ha! He may out grow this. It seems to take pups until they are 3 or 4 to stop acting looney.
8.He is quite a lovely little dog. When I scratch his tummy he pets his snout and talks to me. He is fairly loving and will grow more so as he relaxes.
I enjoy having him around.
9. He likes to dig holes as some dachshunds do and is learning to stay out of my garden boxes.it takes them a while to catch on to that but he will learn like the rest have. I
He will make someone a really lovely pet once he learns not to get on the cupboards lol!
