Fern is a German Shepherd mix pup found abandoned and starving in a remote rural area.  We estimate her date of birth to be mid-March, 2012.  She currently weighs about 24 lb., stands 18 in. at the shoulder, and will likely mature to be a 40-50 lb. dog.  Fern almost didn't make it.  When found, she tried to run, but couldn't.  She was so weak from starvation, parasite infestation and anemia, she simply collapsed into a patch of ferns by the roadside...hence, the name.  She has recovered from her ordeal and is now spayed and fully-vaccinated.  She has been de-wormed and is current on flea, tick and heartworm preventives.  Fern is highly intelligent.  Within 5 hours, she knew her new name.  Within 5 days, she sat for a treat.  Within 10 days, she was leash-trained and house-trained.  After about a month, Fern is learning how to play with the other rescue dogs at the her foster home.  She does pretty  well with the older household cats but can't resist chasing the silly younger cat when it scampers and taunts her.  She is initially cautious with strangers but warms up to folks once she feels safe.  She is a fine guard dog, barking only when "something is happening".  Fern follows her foster mom everywhere and lies quietly on the floor when her human is busy with other activities.  She doesn't want to be abandoned ever again. This dog is currently located in Arkansas and will be transported to the northeast once adopted.
