About Mckenzie

  • Status: Adopted!
  • Species: Dog
3/17/23 Mckenzie- poodle mix
McKenzie and her sister Austin were dumped at a camp ground at Lake Ouachita in Arkansas. These gorgeous girls have been thru a lot in their young lives. A witness saw a man in a truck pull up, pour out a bag of food, then kicked the dogs out of the truck and sped away. Days later, they were still there. That is when they came into rescue. We are very thankful for the person who saw this take place- he watched out for them and made sure they had food each day, but his camping trip was coming to an end and he didn't want to leave them. Mckenzie seems to be a puppy at about 6 mo old. She is about 35-40 lbs currently, heartworm negative, vaccinated, and will be spayed on 3/20. She is friendly and sweet natured. She does need some work on manners, but that will come. I don't think she had ever been indoors before she came into rescue because everything seems brand new to her. She has only had 1 accident in her crate, the 1st night she was here, but has successfully held it over night since then. She is energetic and fun to have. She has a gorgeous curly coat along her back and long, straighter hair on her chest, head and ears. Her coat is very soft. I do not believe she would be considered hypoallergenic. My belief is that she is the product of a backyard doodle breeder, and she didn't have the desired non shedding coat, which is likely the reason she was dumped. Another reason to not support breeders- you don't know what they do with the puppies that don't turn out the way they want. McKenzie and her sister are wonderful girls who should be fine in a family with or without children, as they are very loving and kind hearted. They are both submissive pee'ers- meaning they will squat and tinkle a little bit when approached. This is common behavior with dogs who have been under socialized and/or abused. It usually resolves with confidence building and trust. They are doing great in their foster home and they do very well with other dogs- they are both very submissive. Mckenzie will need a family who will be kind, patient, and gentle with her as she learns to be more trusting. She will need adequate exercise daily- she is not hyper, but is pretty energetic. A fenced yard is not required, but she is not leash trained yet, so if you do not have a fence, you'll need a plan for her potty time and exercise. She does have pretty good recall and has not tried to run from her foster home, she is content to stay close by, but she may take off if she sees something interesting, so that is something to keep in mind. I believe she will pick up on leash training pretty quickly, it's just hard to work with them individually when we have so many to care for each day. It's all we can do some days just to feed, potty, and keep everyone clean and give them a few pats on the head. There's not much time left for training. These girls do not have to be adopted together. They will each need some time to adjust to their new homes and some training but they have tons of potential and will be very loyal, loving girls to anyone who puts forth the effort to help them reach their potential.
